Diarreah vs Dysentery: How can we prevent them with Dietery management??

I believe you won't find a single person who hasn't suffered from diarrhea and dysentery.

As a student of Nutrition I want you to be aware of these matters. So let's get started.

Diarrhea Vs Dysentery:

1. The typical syndrome of diarrhea is watery stool.

     A diarrhea can be called dysentery when the stool is in the form of mucous includes blood and potential sufferingss from cramping and fever.


2. Diarrhea usually affects the smaller bowel while dysentery affects the colon.

3. Effects of diarrhea are not that serious expect from a risk of dehydration. Dysentery can cause a lot of complications, if left untreated.

4. Fever is less common in diarrhea but more common in dysentery.


5. There's no cell death in  diarrhea and the infection is only caused by the release  of some toxins or infecting agents.

But in dysentery the upper epithelial cells are attacked and destroyed by the pathogen or disease causing agent.

6. Diarrhea is mostly viral. E. coli  can also cause watery diarrhea. Dysentery is mostly bacterial. E. coli, shigella, salmonela are the most common causative organisms.

Prevention and Cure:

 "Prevention is better than the cure"


To prevent diarrhea and dysentery following  advices can be followed.

  • Always maintain personal hygiene.
  • Always wash your hand before eating and after visiting toilet.
  • Wash your hand after handling garbage.
  • Eat home made healthy foods.
  • Avoid non covering contaminated foods.
  • Wash fruits, vegetables and other food before eating.
  • Properly cover your food.
  • Store food in a safe place where contamination is very little.
  • Keep yourself clean
  • Drink pure water
  • Don't prepare food next to the contamination source.


To cure diarrhea and dysentery, following dietery management should be taken.

  • Drink ORS (Oral Rehydration solution) also known as saline. 
  • Drink more fluids at 15 to 30 minutes interval. Drink lemon water with sugar and salt. Drink boiled water mixed with sugar and salt. During diarreah the water soluble vitamins, vit B and vit C are lost. That's why lemon water with sugar and salt would be helpful.
  • Avoid solid foods for one day and first start with simple blended food.
  • Eat fibre rich fruits,vegetables and other foods.
  •  Do not eat raw food, non-vegetarian, spicy and seasoned food.
  •  Avoid milk and milk products.


This is the idea in brief I know about diarrhea and dysentery.  I know my knowledge may not be so perfect. Because, as a human being I might make mistakes
