RE: Lou Reed Lyrics-29 – Cascading slowly, he lifted her wholly and boldly (from “Street Hassle”) (Now Playing Week 10)

in #nowplaying7 years ago

I disagree on the masterpiece classification of this particular album (and pretty much everything Lou Reed has recorded after “Transformer”), but I’m happy that people still talk about his work and analyze it. His work was nearly journalistic and a harsh reflection of his times, and it turns out that we’ve finally arrived to the point where we can romanticize his descriptions.

Thanks for the intriguing comment. For me, I believe he continued to make "great albums" into the 80s, but not much thereafter. I guess our "cut-off point" varies by about a decade.

But I must admit, the VU albums are without par. And in all honesty, this is the last of his albums that I would classify a masterpiece.

Interestingly, I virtually stopped listening to Lou in the late 80s. (Same with many other artists whom I had listened to since my youth.) But after Lou died and I reviewed much of his work, I realized that in fact he had continued to make some pretty good music. And I developed a heightened respect for all his earlier work.
