Relax Sunday - Tortoise care, building a habitat
Hello! Have you ever thought of getting a tortoise?
Do not just buy a tortoise if you don't have place to put him or her. It's not good for a tortoise to wander around a house or an apartment, there is some reasons for that.
First of all it gets to cold in the long run, a turtle need a place where it's warm!
Second of all, there is no edible green, of course you can put a plate with food down but if you want a healthy tortoise, I recommend making a home and have a feeding place (you can feed your tortoise everyday second day if you make enough the first day, just watch out for flies, soggy salad/cucumber or mold). Make sure it always have access to fresh water, you don't want a sick tortoise now, do you?
Stress almost always ends in a dead tortoise, if a tortoise is stressed over time it may develop Respiratory Infections. Respiratory system infections are common in pet tortoises, especially in wild-caught. What often causes these problems are, poorly heated houses, no clean water, available food, poor sanitation, etc. Over time this causes stress.
- As you can se on the picture below, I built a 1x1m box out of plywood, make sure to have the corners covered so it doesn't climb out and hurt it self. A tip is to build the front of box a bit lower so it's easier to interact with your turtle.
- Add some nice, clean and not to moist dirt (gif, let it load)
- Put some hay in for your turtle to sleep under.
- Add some tree trunks and some vegetation, you can use plastic plants, just make sure your turtle isn't hungry over time so it doesn't eat it.
I started following you a week ago. All your publications are wonderful and useful. Thank you
