My question: Is there an easy direct way to convert STEEM or SBD to USD? I understand it can be converted to bitcoin and then to USD via exchanges. But I wish there was a way to convert it directly to fiat currency and also maybe buying STEEM or SBD with fiat directly. Is there anything like that out there or maybe some projects in works to keep an eye on? Thanks
Not at the moment. The easiest way is to sell your STEEM or SBD to Bitcoin with services such as Bittrex or Blocktrades (preferred by many) and then sell your Bitcoins to USD.
It's all on the community to either develop a decentralized exchange on the STEEM Blockchain (some people want to do this at one point), or to showcase to other exchanges that there is a sufficient demand from people who want to buy STEEM directly for it to make sense to make this available.
I think STEEM is on the right path, at least with the likely upcoming fork which will allow more users to join steemit without it costing steemit inc as much as it does today. So I would expect to see this may be in the next 6 months or so. All we can do in the meantime is to help make this community be so awesome that more people want STEEM tokens and thus increases the demand for such a service to exist :)

Indeed, it would be great if we had an intrinsic market not only for changing SBD versus steem, but also BTC. The fees we spend at the moment at poloniex, bittrex, blocktrades et al. could be diminshed or vanished this way. I'm not an experienced programmer any more, but I think it isn't impossibly to implement such features.
