We Have Peace In Our Time...Maybe
"We have peace in our time!" was the infamous quote credited to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin upon returning from his summit meeting with Herr Hitler in 1938. Well we all know how that turned out.
Now in 2018 we're looking at something similar between North and South Korea.
Since Trump's meeting with Kim Jung Un (or even maybe slightly before) the two Koreas have been working on de-escalating the peninsula. Here are some promising headlines from recent months that I encourage you to google and see for yourself.
North, South Korea begin removing landmines along fortified border
Koreas, UNC complete JSA disarmament verification
‘Mutual trust’ dawning over Korea
So with the removing of mines around the DMZ and troops being pulled back from the DMZ it's hard for a guy like me not to be optimistic or I at least cautiously optimistic. The events that have been going on this past year is almost like a miracle. Ever since the Korean War broke out there has never been anything like this on the peninsula. Sure there was lots of "feel good meetings" and agreements made but what is happening now is real.
As someone who lives the duel life of a soldier/civilian here I can't help but also be cautious at the same time.
Some questions my colleagues and myself ask are;
Why are they doing this?
Is there economy going to implode and so they want to play nice now?
Are the Chinese putting pressure on North Korea to play nice? etc.
Is this a Trojan horse?
For all I know this really could be a sinister plot by North Korea to play nice in order to get the ROK/US alliance to become complacent and when the time is right strike. I don't know what is really going on with the North but I'm not complaining. I hope things continue to improve.
