Christianity In Nigeria And The Battle Against Villainous Elements

So I was at a wedding today when a pastor started to talk about battles the church in Nigeria is facing. He spoke about elements working to halt the progress of the church, and steps had been taken to defeat the efforts of these elements with himself spearheading the whole thing.

My cynical self already interpreted it as the man hailing himself as lord defender of the christian faith in Nigeria from demons and other spiritual forces. But as he went on I realized my error as he spoke of efforts made to push christian religious studies out of the school curriculum. He said If it had gone through teachers would have had to refer to Jesus as a regular man who had tales of grandeur spun around him. However this pastor who I later learnt is the Christian Association of Nigeria president worked with some members of senate and house of rep to sponsor a bill to block such a move.

He also spoke of another effort to make it mandatory to study Arabic/Islamic studies in order to gain admission into the university. I wonder as the pastor also did, why an African country rich in culture and already using a foreign language as her primary language would adopt Arabic. The pastor and his team also succeeded in blocking this move.

After returning home I dug a little and found out the media battle had been on for a while, with the government agency NERDC in charge of school curriculum giving a statement that there were no such plans to faze out Christian studies, and there's no cause like Arabic/Islamic, either Arabic (as a language course the only other option is French), or Islamic studies as a religious subject alongside Christian religious studies.

So the pastor talks of a battle while the government claims there is no such thing. I would say I would try to be objective in this but the government have since lost my trust. They do not have any shred of accountability, and as such I believe there is a scheme -might not be as grandiose as the pastor painted but there is something -and we should watchful lest in a few years we wake up in an Islamic state.

Thank you.

Honestly, I found what your pastor said is totally not surprising.
The only thing I would have had guessed the inclination of studying the Arabic language is not only for Islamic religious studies, but also could have been economic link.
In Malaysia, schools have options to learn religious studies for Muslims, but other faiths and religion still do have their freedom of religious practices.
Well, at least during my younger days.
But these days the political correctness is so wide spread that even significant history (so that we learn the lesson / the moral behind it) is being wiped off from the books in schools. There's less and less important things to learn in school these days.

There's almost always a political agenda with any decisions about religion that end up in the government's hands (or at least it's painted that way). Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for reading it

Just watching it play out...

Religion and politics intertwined can cause a lot of problems. I could go on for hours about this subject but will just leave it at this.

A whole lot, my country is proof of that.

Always hard to judge what is going on in a place when your are outside of it. The truth is probably somewhere between the two arguments. On the other hand, it could be waaay worse than what anyone on the outside knows. I remember speaking to a Rwandan before the genocide happened, and even from what he told me, there is no way I could have imagined things could ever be as dangerous as they turned into.

That is the problem when the government lack transparency, the masses never truly know whats going on
