Oyo state(ON YOUR OWN)
I know i was able to get some people attention with On Your Own, the truth is i won't be talking about the popular slang in nigeria on your own which truly everyone reading this is on your own state of mind and you think in your own way, still let take a look about the largest state in nigeria southwest region.
Oyo state is the largest state in Nigeria's southwest region. The Yoruba dominated state which shares its western border with the Republic of Benin is also one of the most populated states in the region with almost 7 million inhabitants.
Oyo holds a special place in Yoruba history and culture as the seat of power of the ancient Kingdom of Oyo; an offshoot of the much older lfe Kingdom, which was established around the 15th century and extended its influence beyond the present day southwest of Nigeria, to Benin and Togo to the west.
The Oyo Kingdom was renowned for its superior cavalry, and wielded great influence up till the 18th century, but fell shortly after due to internal wrangling and rebellion. As a direct offshoot of Ife, the ancient Oyo, founded by Prince of Ife Oranmiyan, is also considered one of the cradles of the Yoruba civilization.
Though separated by the entire breadth of Ogun state, Oyo state's capital city Ibadan benefitted immensely from its proximity to Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos. The two cities, both ranked amongst Africa's most populous metropolitan areas, are connected by a 120km long dual carriage expressway.
At the time of Nigeria's independence in 1960, Ibadan was the largest city in the federation, and ranked just behind Cairo, Egypt and Johannesburg, South Africa on the continent.
Oyo state was created in 1976 out of the old Western state, and originally encompassed present day Osun state until General Ibrahim Babangida authorized their split in 1991. Oyo state currently has 33 Local Government Areas: Akinyele, Afijio, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan North-East, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan South-East, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa East, Ido, Irepo, Iseyin, Kajola, Lagelu, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Oyo West, Atiba, Atigbo, Saki West, Saki East, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Ibarapa North, Olorunsogo, Oluyole, Ogo Oluwa, Surulere, Orelope, Ori Ire, Oyo East and On a Ara.
