Refuse disposal in Nigeria

in #nigeria6 years ago

Refuse disposal in Nigeria has always been a very big problem. Successive administration have failed to take proactive measures to find a better way to deal with this problem. Some have attempted door-to-do approach (which appears to be the best) but due to lack of political willpower this approach does not last beyond few months of its trial.
The use of open receptacles is the most popular way of refuse collection and disposal in Nigeria. From my observation, this approach is not really good as it has its attendant environmental and health implications. Take for instance the bad odour that oozes out from these open receptacles are nothing to write home about. Air pollution is another disadvantage of this approach.
More so, these receptacles are also breeding grounds for rodents and other dangerous animals. Recently, there was an outbreak of lassa fever in some states of the federation. This, to me, should have been traced to these open receptacles. Government should do something about this so as to avoid an outbreak of epidemic in the country. God save us. image
