INTRODUCING BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

Over the years, the emergence of the advanced system of blockchain in solving different problems in different sectors and improving the interaction of humans with each other has attracted the attention of businesses, companies, individuals as well as corporate organizations in adopting/embracing the technology. There are more than 2,000 cryptocurrecncies in the world each designed to solve a particular problem. The gradual public acceptance of the bitcoin and other altcoins globally has resulted in the rise in value of these cryptocurrencies as more companies and individuals now use these coins to solve one problem or the other.

The blockchain Technology is an advanced technology that provides fast, cheap and secured transactions between individuals and other users without the need for a middle man or third party while ensuring privacy of the users’ information.

THE GLOBAL LAST MILE PACKAGE DELIVERY SYSTEM AND ITS CHALLENGES

In recent years, the e-commerce has gained more attention which has surpassed the initial patronage in previous years with the e-commerce expected to generate $2.4 trillion globally in 2018 which will enhance the growth of the last mile logistics. The US is expected to spend $632 billion shopping online by 2020 which will be almost $200 billion increase from what was generated in 2017 and more than 2.14 billion people are expected to buy goods online in 2021 above the 1.66 billion digital buyers in 2016 the same year that about 65 billion parcels were shipped worldwide.

However, the rapid growth of e-commerce market has created a challenge for delivery companies in managing the exponential and fast growing market and eventually not able to meet the consumer demands in providing and effective and efficient last mile delivery services.

Additionally, the biggest challenges in last mile delivery are often driven by customers such as incorrect addresses, remote locations, cramped and often times unsecured storage rooms locations, absence of the customer to receive the package, unexpected cancellations of orders and returning orders among e.t.c which has created the difficulty for delivery companies in providing an adequate last mile delivery services to final consumers.

Similarly, the issue of package theft and packages being lost on transit have been another issue that requires an urgent attention and the avoidance of missed deliveries and lost or stolen packages from homes has caused 35% of Americans to ship their packages to alternative address resulting in extra costs, long distance traveled and increased emission.

The existing package delivering companies such as UPS and FedEx do not provide consumers with last mile delivery service as they only rely on the United States Postal Services for residential deliveries which is has been overwhelmed by the demand for a specific day deliveries as the USPS make just one stop at a residence per day. This is as a result of the existing delivering companies in the package delivery industry not ready to embrace the change of a trending movement of users from B2B to B2C which has continued to accelerate over the past five to ten years as e-commerce was normalized.

Another problem in last mile delivery is Carriers trying to cut the cost of logistics on delivering packages to consumers in their residences in order boost their margin profit which is against the way the carriers have designed their system initially eventually feeding consumers with empty promises that are not realistic. This is turn discourages the use of delivery companies by end users as most of the Carriers fail in their promises and consumers eventually resolve to shipping their package to an alternate address attracts an extra cost.

Retailers and end users need to be provided with choice, convenience and control over their packages by carriers for a better and improved package delivery experience where they can be sure of safety and security of their packages without any report of theft or lost and last mile delivery needs to be made as convenient as possible to the end consumers so that the end consumer can buy more from that particular retailer.

THE STATE OF THE CURRENT LAST MILE LOGISTICS

When placing an order online, customers often place a high value on speed, flexibility and cost of delivery which are very important in satisfying the complex demands of end consumers. Customers demand to have the flexibility from a variety of delivery options and locations for pick up.

The other packages get sent to the fulfillment center where the retailers( both small and large face the challenges of shipping rates and dimensional weight fees which are mostly expensive and not favorable to these retailers especially the smaller retailer who lacks a large network of distribution centers eventually causing retailers to find alternative options of delivery to end consumers.

The Package is then assigned to a route and a driver which is scheduled to dispatch at a particular date and the package is delivered and left at the residence even if the consumer is not at home.

Additionally, rigid infrastructures which do not keep up with consumer demands result in the low quality last mile delivery services such as :

Access which is determined delivery density, weight, size , distance and mode of delivery that matters to carriers

Distance in which the routes taken are subjected to adjust by the driver based on historical routes.

Missed Deliveries which may be caused by environmental impact (Carbon Footprint), limited fuel economy, cost of packaging materials required as well as harsh environmental conditions.

Traffic which might be so heavy in the cities thereby hindering the package delivery at the estimated time except in rural communities where traffic is not experienced.

Stolen packages from consumers homes since 95% of residential delivery takes place between the hours when most of the working Americans are at work (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) because the packages are left at the residence of the end users even if they are not at home.

With these challenges mentioned above, the need to revolutionize and improve the last mile delivery system to meet up with the exponential rate of the global e-commerce market in providing a safe and convenient last mile delivery to end users is however essential.
