TREZOR Releases Update to Troubleshoot Hardware Security '
SatoshiLabs' SatoshiLabs hardware wallet has emailed customers asking them to update their firmware to fix a legacy "security issue".
TREZOR, which has a reputation as one of the most secure wallets available, says that the vulnerability affects only the hardware version of "under 1.5.2."
Although specific technical details are not available, SatoshiLabs has been trying to convince users that only physical theft will present an opportunity for the offender to potentially harm the device.
"It is important to note that this is not a remote execution attack," the email to the customer explained, which is available as a blog post here.
"To exploit this problem, an attacker needs physical access to a TREZOR device that is unpacked with no electronic equipment found. It is impossible to do this without damaging the plastic box."
It continues that the "safe coin" provided device is kept within reach of its owner.
While more information is to circulate "in the coming days," TREZOR adds, various theories have appeared in social media about the nature and severity of their vulnerability.
"Trezor has so far underestimated the importance of this hack," an intermediate newspaper asked for clues as to how the 1.5.2 device compromise was read.
"No long-term access is required to copy all your confidential information from Trezor using this hack: It can be done in just 15 seconds."
