NitrogenNews: Science Story 1: Earliest Modern Human remains outside of Africa, discovered.
(1/25/2018)
On January 25th, 2018, Scientists announced the discovery of a fragment of a human jawbone, dated between 177,000 and 194,000 years old. The fragment was found in Misliya Cave, in the Galilee region of Northern Israel. Prior to this discovery, the oldest known Homo sapien remains outside of Africa, which had been discovered at the Skhul and Qafzeh archaeological sites also in the Galilee region of Israel, were no more than 120,000 years old. The jawbone fragment has been associated with other findings in Misliya cave, including stone tools created using the "Levallois technique", a technique seen as distinctive of early modern humans. The findings would align nicely with recent genetic evidence, which suggests that Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa around 220,000 years ago.
