THE FOUNDER OF SILK ROAD REFUSED FROM THE MONEY CONFISCATED FROM THE PLATFORM
According to the publication, on September, 29 the court decided to transfer over $48 million in favor of the state, which were received from the sale of 144,000 BTC, confiscated from the accounts of Silk Road.
This entire amount will be spent on repayment of monetary claims amounting to more than $180 million, presented to Ulbricht in the indictment.
Ross Ulbricht, who has been given a life sentence for the distribution of drugs and hacker attacks, has previously claimed his rights to confiscated funds, but now his position has apparently changed. The motives behind Ulbricht's decision are unknown.
The US bailiff service conducted the first auction to sell bitcoins seized from Silk Road in 2014, and sold 30,000 BTC to the well-known investor Tim Draper. In addition, the part of Bitcoins of Silk Road was bought by the Bitcoin Investment Trust of Barry Silbert and other well-known companies.
In future, several other similar auctions were held, including those in Australia.
It is noteworthy that secret services involved in the seizure of the bitcoins were also far from being clean at hand. In particular, this is the story with the US Secret Service agent Sean Bridges made a noise (he took advantage of his official position, and got a considerable number of coins, but eventually he was exposed and went to prison for six years).
In total, the value of the bitcoins seized from Silk Road accounts for that time was estimated at $122 million. Today this amount is even more than $620 million.
