The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that rocked Fukushima, Japan on February 13, 2021 caused minor damage. The earthquake strength was previously estimated to have a magnitude of 7.1 and then it was revised to 7.3.

BMKG Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Daryono said the minor damage was because buildings in Japan had been designed according to the rules to withstand earthquakes.

"It is quite amazing, the impact of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake only caused minor damage, because all buildings in Japan are currently being designed in accordance with the earthquake-resistant building regulations imposed by the government," said Daryono on Sunday (14/2/2021). .

He stated that in the earthquake there were also no casualties. However, it triggered an avalanche and left more than 100 people injured.

Daryono said that the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami because the depth of the hypocenter was close to intermediate, which is about 54 kilometers.

The earthquake's magnitude was large enough with its relatively deep hypocenter, causing a spectrum of strong shocks that was generated to hit a wide area reaching Tokyo City.

The quake is still a series of aftershocks or aftershocks from the main March 11, 2011 earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami.

"This earthquake is like completing an unfinished business in its entirety during the big earthquake in 2011," said Daryono.

Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters the disaster had not caused major damage, but still urged local residents to be prepared in case of aftershocks.

He said the Japanese government had received reports of many injured but no fatalities.

The blackout, which affected about 900,000 houses in one area, was largely resolved by the morning, except for a few hundred houses in Fukushima Prefecture.

According to the Fukushima Prefecture authorities, there are 64 evacuation centers that have been set up in Fukushima and around 200 people have been displaced.

Meanwhile, according to East Japan Railway Co, the Tohoku shinkansen train service between Nasushiobara Station in Tochigi Prefecture and Morioka Station in Iwate Prefecture has been temporarily suspended.

The Yamagata Shinkansen also stopped their services, as did the Akita shinkansen between Morioka and Akita stations.
