UK government urges people to book third Covid jab
Leke Oso Alabi
A UK health minister has urged people to “book yourself in” for a Covid-19 booster shot rather than wait to be called up as pressure intensifies on the government to stave off rising Covid-19 infections in England.
A third coronavirus jab can be administered about six months after the second one was received.
“It’s not just about waiting to be invited,” health minister Edward Argar told Sky News on Thursday. “If you get to the six months plus one week [period], go on the national booking system and book yourself in.”
Argar called the “huge pressure” facing the NHS “sustainable”.
“Get the jab, that’s the best way to ease the pressure on the NHS,” Argar told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Hospitalisations have risen 11 per cent over the past seven days, with 869 being admitted with Covid-19 on Wednesday, the latest figures on the government website said. The daily coronavirus death toll slipped from a six-month high on Wednesday with 179 recorded. However, over the past seven days, the tally has risen 21 per cent.
