RE: @steemit has over $173 000 000 in the coffers and is Powering Down?
The steemit account was originally set up to provide the funds for new members that sign up through facebook or reddit. When you made an account through facebook for example, you are automatically given 5 or so steem power in your account. Those come from the steemit account.
What @trogdor said.
"Why is @steemit not curating? That would be very helpful .. targeting the little guys, giving us hopeless wanderers a biggie bounce!"
The same reason as to why @bittrex and @poloniex aren't, they aren't there as being "users" of the site, they offer a service.
and as to the other questions, its a company, they use money to evolve the company further and keep it up and well. I bet most people in the team have steem power of their own so I doubt they would need to get paid from @steemit.
That was mostly just wishful thinking .. your why not sounds reasonable. However, they can do whatever they bloody want ... why not raise up and make powerful a few scoundrels, for the sake of diversity?
As far as where the money is going .. ohhhh.. they are most def getting much of this .. it is not going into R&D :)
