Dwindle Mayhew: Harrison Ford drives tributes to Star Wars' Chewbacca star

Star Wars star Harrison Ford has paid an enthusiastic tribute to Chewbacca entertainer Peter Mayhew, who has passed on matured 74, saying: "I adored him."

"He put his spirit in the character and conveyed incredible delight to the Star Wars group of onlookers."

Star Wars maker George Lucas had needed a tall on-screen character to play Chewbacca and at first thought to be 6ft 6in (1.98m) David Prowse for the job.

Robert Iger, leader of The Walt Disney Company, tweeted that the "darling" star was "a delicate monster playing a delicate mammoth".

The Force Awakens executive JJ Abrams and The Last Jedi chief Rian Johnson included their voices.

In a manually written note posted on Twitter, Abrams stated: "Subside was the loveliest man... kind and quiet, steady and empowering. A sweetheart to work with and right now profoundly missed."
