German court allows cities to ban Diesel cars

Supreme Administrative Court decided on 27th of February

On the 27th of February, the German Supreme Administrative Court in Leipzig decided that German cities may now be able to ban cars using Diesel powered engine from driving inside their urban areas.
Due to many German cities exceeding the carbon dioxid limits, Germans might now be prohibited from driving their Diesel cars in some of those cities.
Every city has to take this decision on it's own, this decision is nation wide and will only apply to a few single cities.

Some cities already consider using their new rights

Cologne, Munich, Hamburg and Dusseldorf are only some of the cities planning to implement the bans due to them exceeding the limits for years. Many more cities will also debate about introducing corresponding laws themselves.

Stuttgart announced that they plan on already banning Diesel cars as soon as possible.

Cars with new Euro 6 standards are not affected

The bans will only hit cars having Euro 5 standards and less. The problem is, that the Euro 6 norm was introduced on 01.09.2014, meaning that many rather new cars might be affected, which makes many Germans angry, as the price for selling their Diesel cars will probably drop soon.

There might be exceptions for working traffic

It is most likely that most cities will introduce exceptions for ambulances, police cars or even delivery trucks, as these are important for the infrastructure and are mostly using Diesel engines.
