50 Years of Wait to get Married ....... Gay couple in Austraila
A couple in their eighties are excited they can finally get married, after more than 50 years together.
Arthur Cheeseman, 85, and John Challis, 89, knew they were committed for life – but they couldn’t sign the papers as until now same sex marriage has been illegal in Australia.
Arthur and John previously spoke about the need for same sex marriage to be legalised in an interview with the Global Mail.
The country voted to legalise gay marriage earlier this week, with more than 60% of people in favour.
The survey wasn’t binding, but politicians will now move to introduce new laws so people like Arthur and John can get hitched.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said he wants legislation in place by Christmas.
We are the same as everyone else.’ The couple met in 1967 as they were leaving an art gallery in Sydney and happened to smile at each other.
