A massive cyber attack targeted Ukraine on Tuesday, before spreading to several countries. This global attack is carried out thanks to a renegade called GoldenEye, close to Wannacry.

Ukraine, then quickly the rest of the world. On Tuesday, 27 June, a massive cyber attack first hit Ukraine, blocking the operation of several banks in many public and commercial enterprises, before spreading to other countries.

Several heavyweights in the industrial sector have been struck, such as the Russian steel company Evraz, the Russian oil group Rosneft, the British advertising giant WP and the Danish shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk. In France, construction specialist Saint Gobain also acknowledged having been affected. Contacted by France 24, the group did not want to confirm that the attack was linked to the one that started in Ukraine.

The virus "spreads around the world, a large number of countries are affected," confirms on Twitter Costin Raiu, researcher of the Russian laboratory Kaspersky.

 Piracy of the NASA

"The attack is still ongoing," Catalin Cosoi, a cyber security specialist with the Romanian company Bitdefender, contacted France 24, said in the afternoon. Linked "to the NSA piracy tools that were stolen" in 2016.

The attack was carried out thanks to a renegade baptized GoldenEye, resembling the virus Wannacry, which had defrayed the chronicle at the beginning of May. This malicious software had taken hundreds of thousands of computers around the world hostage. Their users could no longer access data except to pay a ransom. This time, the ransom required is $ 300 per computer infected and the virus prohibits users from turning on their computers. "So far eight payments have been paid to cybercriminals," said Catalin Cosoi. A number likely to increase in the next few hours.

 Long return to normal

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry described the attack as "the worst cyber attack in the country's history". The operation of Chernobyl was also affected according to a spokesman. "Banks are struggling to take care of their customers and do banking," said the Ukrainian central bank. The return to normal is not expected for several days. "If this attack uses a new security flaw that has not been corrected, it could have been Wannacry's breadth," said Catalin Cosoi.

Ukraine, which seems to have been the first targeted country, is often the victim of cyber attacks and regularly accuses Russia of being responsible. In 2016, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accused the Russian intelligence services of causing 6,500 attacks against the Ukrainian institutions in two months. Moscow has always denied.
