There is a big thread on this on reddit for those who want more info:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/4vtv1m/bitfinex_down_due_to_bitcoin_security_breach/

P.S. The following thread from 11 months ago says they used defunct code from a website that had already been hacked:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3igv0r/bitfinex_pretty_sure_we_are_dealing_with_amateurs/

Bitfinex was released within some weeks of the Bitcoinica source code leak.
The codebase was copied from a defunct, thrice robbed company.
That code is not capable of keeping the database consistent at peak loads.
That code is not scalable. That code was not, and is not correct.
Not correct according to specification. (Which doesn't exist.)

I think this is just an issue and not really happen bitfinex hacked the site, I see the market response to the falling price of bitcoin few hours ago, okay let's look at the latest news from the next bitfinex
I just saw people panic Sell

Thanks for the information @r4fken

"government attempts to centralize descentrlizado I want to regulate and control what he was born to be free"

some real CSI stuff going on in the comments on the post you mentioned man. Will keep an eye on it :)

It's important to keep in mind that, if true, the failure was in this specific exchange's security, and not within the Bitcoin protocol itself. Because of this, I discourage panic selling if the price drops a lot. Bitcoin hasn't inherently lost value as a result of this breach.

Yes, but none the less, it might be an excellent time to buy.

..u should give it a try

People never learns... there are alternatives to centralized exchanges. I didn't know about bitshares but I've used Bitsquare. Own your keys, own your money. Trust no one.

we need more decentralized exchanges!

Thanks!

on reddit the "investigation" of the community https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/4vupa6/p2shinfo_shows_movement_out_of_multisig_wallets/

if the worst case is true 125k in Bitcoin or 90 million USD got lost via hack. Holy cow. Hope the funds got transfered from Bitfinex and not the Hacker.

Let's be honest bad publicity is good publicity it teaches people the importance of online security and gets more media attention leading to more awareness. If BTC drops to $100 a lot of people will lose money yes, but it still has its underlying technology, same benefits same features. Still world changing. Motorola made the first mobile phones where are they today? Bitcoin is paving the way for innovation regardless of price!!
