Rex Tillerson got fired
Hello, people of steemit! Welcome to my page.
Well, some interesting things in the news today. President Trump fired his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson today, and intends to replace him with current CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Steve Goldstein, Tillerson's top spokesman was also fired, apparently for contradicting the White House's account of the firing. Trump has announced that he will replace Pompeo with deputy director Gina Haspel. If confirmed, she will be the first female head of the CIA. Apparently, she is somewhat of a controversial figure due to her past work with the CIA as a clandestine officer.
This doesn't really come as a surprise to a lot of people, Tillerson and Trump have been in disagreement about many of Trump's foreign policy decisions, including things such as the Paris Climate Accord, the Iran nuclear deal, alleged Russian election interference, and most recently, disagreements on how to deal with North Korea. Trump has been in the news recently about wanting to hold meetings with Kim Jong Un, and Tillerson was of the opinion that it was a bad idea at this point.
Depending on which news story you read, this was either a good thing, or making a bad thing worse by putting Pompeo in the position of Secretary of State. According to various news sources, Tillerson wanted to leave the Iran nuclear deal alone, and Trump wanted to change it. Apparently, Pompeo has similar thoughts about the treaty to those of Trump.
In other news, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokes person, James Schwab, has resigned his post in San Fransisco, saying "I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts. I asked them to change the information. I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that. Then, I took some time and I quit." Schwab said that the Trump administration's statements about immigrants escaping arrest in northern California were misleading. He also said that the lack of transparency at ICE made it impossible for him to continue to do his job.
The news just keeps on being interesting, no matter which political side you're on.
