Why Everyone Should Be Concerned About Spanish Internet Censorship
This weekend Catalonia was hit with a brutal response to its independence referendum vote.
The Spanish government allowed police to use undue force in order to close down the vote (which it had previously deemed illegal). Their tyrannical actions left over 800 injured, including women and old people.
The scenes of violence caused by Spanish police - which had been brought into Catalonia especially to close down voting stations - have shocked people all over the world.
What many people might not realize, however, is that the Spanish government also imposed huge amounts of Internet censorship in an attempt to quell the vote.
"Websites that suffered blackouts included pro-referendum sites, sites that helped people to vote, and sites that advertised the locations of polling booths."
Despite the fact that this weekends oppression was specifically aimed at a small part of Spain, all Spanish people should be feeling afraid of their government. Why? Because this type of behavior is a very slippery slope.
This time, the rest of Spain watched on from the comfort of their homes, as a distant part of their nation was stripped of its democratic rights and freedom of speech.
But how long will it be before that oppression raises its ugly head in their own backyard?
This weekend Spain demonstrated what it is willing to do to its own people in order to stay in control, and that should frighten not only all of Spain but the rest of the Western world too.
Digital privacy and freedom of speech are being eroded all over the Western world. Elected governments are passing more and more overreaching laws that strip people of their fundamental human rights.
People need to wake up, or else it won't be long before censorship and propaganda is the norm for everyone.
