Four Tails Elephant Dead Hit by Train in India
GUWAHATI - A herd of animals that cross the railroad causing an accident in India. Four elephants died after being hit by a passing train, while another was seriously wounded.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 10, approximately 177 kilometers from Guwahati in the State of Assam. The collision caused the train to run off the track, but no passengers were injured.
Emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene and vets raced with time, trying to rescue a severely injured elephant.
"Just because of the close coordination between field officials in the forestry department and the railway department, there are many elephants being rescued," said Pranav Jyoti Sharma, a spokesman for India's Regional Railway Office, as quoted by Metro on Monday (02/12/2010).
Sharma confirmed that the incident was being investigated. However, he said that the train is not traveling faster than the speed limit.
Collision between train and elephant is not unusual in India that has a population of approximately 30 thousand elephants. In 2017, at least 60 elephants died due to similar incidents.
