Boeing 737-200 Aircraft Belonging to Cuba Falls in Rice Fields of Santiago de las Vegas
A plane belonging to the Cuban government airline reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff in Havana.
Boeing 737-200 managed by Cubana de Aviacion crashed when flying from Jose Marti International Airport on Friday (05/18/2018) at 12:08 pm local time.
Government media, Granma via CNN reported, the Holgie plane hit the rice fields in Santiago de las Vegas.
Witnesses said they saw black smoke rising with flames after the plane crashed.
The AFP news agency reported that three of the 104 passengers were rescued, and are currently in critical condition.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel immediately reviewed the scene of the accident.
"I am afraid if there are many deaths in this incident," he said.
The plane crash with the last major casualty in Cuba occurred in July 1997 ago in the waters of Santiago de Cuba.
At that time, the Antonov-24 plane crashed, killing 44 passengers. Including two Brazilians, and two Spaniards.
