May 9 elections in Malaysia

The general election will be held on May 9 in Malaysia. The country's Election Commission (EC) said this Tuesday. For the 61-year-old United Nations National Organization (UMNO) alliance, this election can be a tough test.

Election Commission Chairman Mohammad Hashim Abdullah told a press conference that the date of the election was fixed on May 9.

According to Reuters news, candidates nomination process will continue until April 28. Candidates can run the election campaign for 11 days.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the extinction of Parliament on Friday after a debate over the issue. The opposition coalition has nominated former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad to the Prime Minister's post.

Najib is expected to come to power again.
