Solutions to America's Gun Problem

According to a Washington Post article, “ at least 150,000 students have experienced a school shooting since Columbine” and 122 citizens have been killed in a school shooting. The most recent is the Parkland High School shooting, where Nicholas Cruz killed 17 people. A week after the event one question has risen in the media and throughout social media, should we have stricter gun control?

Let me start by saying that I do not support banning ALL guns. But, that does not mean we do not need to regulate guns. I am for HIGHLY regulating and even banning high capacity rifles, bump stocks, and military-style guns. I’m also for doing multiple background checks and a waiting period after someone buys a gun.

Solution 1: this solution involves banning all guns (pistols and military-style guns). We would have to do a nationwide gun buyback bill, where the U.S government pays its citizens for their guns. Gun owners would oppose this and maybe even moderate democrats. This would also infringe upon someone's second amendment right to own a gun

Solution 2. Banning bump stocks,military-style guns and multiple background checks: More gun owners would be for this solution than the first one and we could also implement a gun buyback bill for rifles. We would focus more on background checks, as there would be more than just one background check. A waiting period right after someone buys a gun would be fundamental in order for this to work.

Situation 3. HIGHLY regulating guns: This solution involves an individual giving up their military-style rifles to the government. The government will then give a specific ID number to the individual and their guns. They will only use them in a government owned, high security, shooting range where they will be stored. The gun owners will have the opportunity to use their guns inside the shooting range but will be forced to leave their guns in the shooting range. The solution will also put into effect a new law that will only permit 1 handgun per person. The individual will have to get multiple background checks, mental clearance, and mandatory yearly training.

Any proposal will not be effective if politicians still take money from companies, including the NRA. To make any legislative change, we will need to ban campaign donations from companies and industries. Then and only then we will achieve what it is right.
