There are conflicting reports from Iranian news agencies about how the attack took place.
A report published Sunday from Fars News said Fakhrizadeh was traveling with his wife Friday in a flak car, along with three vehicles of security personnel, when he heard what sounded like a bullet hitting the vehicle, and he got out of the car to determine what had happened.
As he excited the vehicle, a remotely controlled machine gun opened fire from Nissan which stopped about 150 meters (164 yards) from Fakhrizadeh's car, Fars News said.
