UK Prime Minister Theresa May Denies Dancing To Presidents Trumps Tune Over Syria

Britians Prime Minister, Mrs Theresa May, today made a statement to the UK Parliament on the latest UK military action in Syria.

The Prime Minister was under pressure to lay out the justifications for the military strikes by the UK, US and France which were made in response to the chemical attack in Douma on the 7th April.

She cited the national interest and humanitarian grounds for acting without recalling parliament to vote on the action. She also pointedly stated that she was not dancing to the tune of President Donald Trump. 'Let me be absolutely clear. we have acted because it is in our national interest to do so'.

Referring to the nerve agent attack in Salisbury last month Mrs May said it was vital that the use of such banned substances did not become 'normalised either within Syria, on the streets of the UK or elsewhere'.

That didn't stop the leader of the opposition, Mr Jeremy Corbyn from saying in his reply to Mrs May, 'This statement serves as a reminder that the Prime Minister is accountable to this Parliament, not to the whims of the US President'.

He added 'We clearly need a War Powers Act in this country to transform a now broken convention into a legal obligation' and went on to say 'I believe the action was legally questionable.' This was in criticism of the power of the Prime Minister (under what is termed the Royal Prerogative) to deploy troops without seeking the approval of the Commons.
