Another train disaster

The death of nearly 40 people in a train collision near Daharki in Sindh on Monday morning serves as a sharp reminder of Pakistan Railways' appalling passenger safety record and successive governments' unmet promises to fix the country's crumbling infrastructure.

The catastrophe also casts doubt on the current rulers' commitment to modernising the badly managed railway and refurbishing its ancient tracks and unpredictable signal system in order to improve passenger safety.
