80-Year-Old Grandma Thrown in Jail For Smoking Pot In Her Own Home to Treat Her Arthritis
Clare County, Mich. – Delores Saltzman, an 80-year-old grandma was recently arrested because she had an expired medical marijuana card and police found a very small amount of cannabis in her home, about the equivalent of just a few joints. Last month, Clare County Sheriff’s Deputy Ashley Gruno went by Saltzman home and knocked on the door around 9 pm, in search of the woman’s great-granddaughter, reportedly to return a lost phone and ID. The officer immediately smelled marijuana and began interrogating the poor old woman.
Saltzman was honest with the officer and told her that she was a medical patient that allowed her card to expire, and she was arrested on that small technicality. She was then handcuffed and thrown in a cold jail cell where her arthritis — without the cannabis to help her — began taking its toll. “That’s ridiculous what they do to people, they don’t need to make you that cold,” Saltzman told FOX 17.
“Old Arthur was screaming at me!” she said, referring to her arthritis. “That’s what I want people to do: don’t be ashamed of something that’s going to help you feel better,” she added.
“I just thought it was absolutely ridiculous to put her through this like that: they could have given her a ticket. And just show us your card later. Reapply for your LARA card, show us this, and then drop the charges,” her son Mark Saltzman said.
Saltzman said that cannabis has saved her life, and helped her with a variety of issues, including appetite, pain, and arthritis. “[Cannabis] saved my life because I had a bad bleed about four years ago, and Mark took care of me. After I smoke I go down to a one, pain-wise. Before I smoke, I would say I’m an 8 right now,” the 80-year-old grandma explained.
Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis made the following statement to FOX 17:
“Law enforcement went to Ms. Saltzman’s home looking for an individual who had been known to stay at that residence. When the deputy arrived, she could smell the odor of marijuana. When she interacted with Ms. Saltzman at the door, Ms. Saltzman admitted to have been smoking marijuana and possessing marijuana and that she had allowed her medical marijuana card to lapse. At that time, Ms. Saltzman turned over to the deputy 7 marijuana pipes, 4 joints, a grinder, and a purple glass jar that also held a quantity of marijuana inside. The deputy arrested Ms. Saltzman for the illegal possession of marijuana and lodged her in the Clare County Jail. Based upon that arrest, a police report and request for charges was generated by the deputy and presented to our office. My assistant prosecutor authorized a possession of marijuana charge based upon the admission by Ms. Saltzman that she wasn’t a medical marijuana card holder and the evidence that she did possess marijuana illegally. However, our goal is to ensure that individuals who utilize medical marijuana are doing so legally. As such, Ms. Saltzman was encouraged to obtain her medical marijuana card and if she did so, the case would be dismissed. She did obtain her medical marijuana card and the case was dismissed.”
Luckily, this week, a Clare County judge signed an order to dismiss Saltzman’s case, however, she still had to spend a night in jail, which was likely traumatic and could lead to health problems for people with compromised immune systems, which is common at her age. Showing the callous, cruel, and inhumane nature of the drug warriors, the sheriff had no remorse and was proud to have thrown a grandma in jail.
“What the person was doing was illegal, had she renewed her medical marijuana card she would have been fine. I agree with the action the prosecutors office and allowing the subject to renew her card, thus dismissing the case. The person was illegally in possession of marijuana,” Clare County Sheriff John Wilson said.
I know that certainly hurt.
I do not understand why anyone would want to arrest an 80-year-old lady. Although at this point I do not attempt to argue with ridiculous police coercion.
I find it disturbing that people who are using cannabis to treat legitmate aliments are still being prosucuted for trying to relieve their symptoms. The medical cannabis industry is in my eyes , essentially a pay to smoke arrangment. But everyone cant afford to keep paying thise fees just to use "a medcine". Here in Arizona a MMJ card runs upwards of 300 dollars every year just to be allowed acces to use medical marijuana. There is no way this women should be in trouble for treating her aliments.
In Oregon it's even higher!
How much is it there?
It can be up to $1500 with all the fees...
Smh thats ridiculous , 300 sounds like a bargain now, lol.
Always good to know that the police are doing such a great job in catching all the heavy criminals ... One down, 2 billion to go!

Round and round we go. So typical. Governments are evil and what makes them evil are the people who have been indoctrinated via public schooling to see them as normal. And what would governments be without the meathead cop "order followers" to carry out their immoral acts for them? They'd be nothing.
Funny. I read that meth-head cop instead of meat-head. But it's OK if cops take drugs or sell drugs or break whatever law they want
See this is the problem with 'legalized' medical marijuana - if you don't pay the fees and get your government permission and have your papers in order, you can still go to jail for possession of a natural plant. I feel like the whole medical marijuana industry is a scam - here in Montana it's not about being sick, it's about paying the doctor $150 to sign some papers, and then paying the state their application fee and then having your card, your government permission slip. Just like driver's license it's bullshit - people don't need to go begging the government for permission to exercise their inherent right to travel, or their right to grow/harvest a natural plant, or their right to use whatever medicine they see fit without government permission slips.
It makes me so angry that the old and vets and seriously sick patients are treated the same as the pothead who just want to be 'legal' - give us the cash and we sign the official papers. It's so wrong. It's all about money and government control, and not about respecting people's rights and ownership of their own body, and government ruins everything they get their greedy power hungry hands on...
You are defintely right in my eyes, its not about whose sick , it about extorting people so they can get "permission" to use cannabis. Meanwhile there are those who need it but can not afford to pay those fees year after year. If your caught with cannabis without a card, you face being subject to fines and possibly jail time.
holy cow...
Upvote me n follow I did for you
I understand how stupid this is. But you break the law and that’s what happens. Our system is designed for fixing unjust laws. If she goes to trial a jury of her peers can determine if a law is just or not.
Breaking the law? How can smoking a plant be against the law.?
Just because a few silly politicians got bribed by big business and made it so.
One plant that kills (Tobacco) legal and one that Cures Illegal, why?.
Soon it's all going to reverse, Big Tobacco is just waiting for the nod from the FEDS and they will be into the Cannabis business soon after., you'll see 20 Marlboro Highs within a few years.
Governments ban and un-ban stuff all the time depending on who paying them the most or where the most votes are.
You mean big timber, not big tobacco....http://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Marihuana_Tax_Act_of_1937.html

This bad thing for the admin to put the grandma in jail. They should think upon it again.
