The quarry was deserted on Tuesday, although empty liquor bottles and beer cans, camp fire rings and trash revealed its popularity as a late night party spot.

The abandoned quarry off Cedarhill Drive near Highway 416, is a popular, but illegal, swimming hole. It is now owned by Mattamy Homes, which has posted No Trespassing signs, signs that are regularly torn down or defaced.

Police have periodically cracked down on trespassers and issued tickets that carry $65 fines, Officer said.

“We’ve been trying to tell people not to go there. It’s dangerous,” Officer said. “It’s a quarry, and it was never meant to be a swimming area.”

The last death at the quarry occurred in 2003, when 18-year-old Sami Mohammed drowned after diving from the quarry’s five-metre high rock walls.

Although this quarry has some dark past of danger and accidents, it still manages to be the hit spot for young adults during the summer season for a great place to cool off and hangout. Just be safe and do not do anything that could harm you or others.
