Asgardia - Join the world's first nation in outer space

in #news8 years ago

Sounds like some video game, but it's an actual project that a multinational wants people to join in order to form the world's first nation created in orbit of Earth to defend the planet.

The name Asgardia comes from the Norse mythology of the city in the skies. The key mission of this nation would be to protect Earth from various threats like space debris, meteorites, and asteroids. Also has plans to try to mine asteroids as they pace close to the planet.

The group has experts in outer space based out of the US, Canada, Russia, and Romania, and the made their ambitious plans at a press conference in Paris on Wednesday October 12th.

In just as little as 18 months, they could be in a position to launch the core robotic satellite, and then start working from there to build on compartments little by little for making a permanent space station.

Below is a sample rendition of what the space station will look like.

It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie but they are actually looking to building a community in space "where people can live, work, and have their own rules and regulations."

A number of new technological advancements must have seemed crazy before they were adopted like the horseless carriage, a current of energy that can be harnessed to light up the night, flying machines, etc

I personally can picture these stations in combination with the space elevators that has been talked about by a number of nations. And having a number of outer space nations that could be linked with a network that would make world travel a lot quicker and safer since it would be completely in an airless environment - just the going up part would take the longest.

Can it work and what type of government would it need to run and operate such a civilization? And more importantly, would you want to sign-up and join this new nation?
