“He died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday”, his family said.

In 1963 he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given 2 years to live. Despite this he showed that the human brain is an incredible thing, pushing past the physical barriers of this world and explaining some of the important facts about our universe.

He will be missed by his family, the scientific community and the world – we stand on the shoulders of giants.
