Illegal oil wells in East Aceh were burnt, at least 18 people were killed, dozens wounded

headerAt least 18 people died, dozens of others suffered burns when an illegal oil well in Ranto Peureulak, East Aceh, caught fire on Wednesday (25/04) morning.
Some of the victims who died have been buried in local food.
Outside the dead and wounded, fire also burned three houses of residents near the source of the fire. Temporary losses are predicted to reach tens of millions of rupiah.
A description issued by the Regional Disaster Management Agency said the fire was allegedly 'coming from a spark when a worker welded the pipe to be put into the well'.
The Aceh Provincial Disaster Management Agency said one drilled well had traditionally discharged oil and gas and at the same time came a group of residents to take out the oil.
It said the group of people who were looking for crude oil amounted to more than 10 people.
Residents came to the site to pick up an unacceptable oil spill.
East Aceh Police Chief, AKBP Wahyu Kuncoro, said until now the fire is still not extinguished and it is still making efforts to fire so as not to widen to other wells drill.
"Almost every house has a drill well behind the house, about 30 meters distance," said East Aceh Police Chief AKBP Wahyu Kuncoro, as reported by journalists in Aceh, Hidayatullah.
Wahyu Kuncoro added the exploding illegal drilling wells had a depth of about 250 meters and sprayed excessive oil due to the volume of oil so much.
He said it is still sterilizing around the exploding wells, so as not to spread to dozens of other wells.
The East Aceh Regent, Hasballah, said there have been four explosions in the same area so far.
The explosion of illegal borehole occurred since around 01.00 WIB. Dozens of injured and dead people were taken to Abdul Azis Perlak Hospital and Jubir Mahmud Hospital, Idi district of East Aceh.
The Regent of East Aceh in an interview with TVOne said that illegal oil wells are in the middle of a residential area.
"Residents do not know technical drilling (safe) ... waste (oil) is scattered," said Hasballah.

A local official told TVOne that the burning well was a 'new well'.
Head of Communications, Public Service and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Agung Pribadi, said that the burning oil wells are in the area of PT Pertamina EP Asset 1.
However, Agung said, the well was illegally exploited by the population.
"The team from Pertamina has already been there, but this case is law enforcement area," he told the press in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, Pertamina's Upstream Oil and Gas Director, Syamsu Alam, claimed to have not received detailed reports from his subordinates related to oil well fires in his company area.
