Australia .. A large priest accused of child sexual abuse

Australian police in Victoria, Cardinal George Bell, the Vatican's chief financial officer, have accused child molestation cases dating back to the past years and ordered him to appear before a court in Melbourne, the state capital and largest city.

Cardinal Bell, 76, is the highest-profile figure charged in the Catholic Church. Deputy police inspector Sean Patton did not elaborate on the charges or the ages of the victims, who are said to have been sexually harassed by the cardinal.

Bell denied the charges, describing them as an assassination attempt on him. He told a news conference in the Vatican state, the center of spiritual leadership of the Catholic Church, that he would take leave from his post to return to his country of Australia to face the allegations in court.
