Indian Air Force's Mirage 2000 crashed in Shivpuri

A Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed due to a system malfunction near Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh during a routine training flight on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Both the pilots ejected safely from the aircraft and were rescued. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. The incident took place around 2:20 pm near Bahreta Sani village in the district, about 120 km from Gwalior, where the IAF training centre is located. The aircraft caught fire after crashing in an agricultural field and smoke started rising from the wreckage. Local authorities immediately rushed rescue teams to the crash site and police also reached the spot. According to defence officials, the aircraft had developed a system malfunction during the flight. The IAF confirmed the incident through an official statement on social media platform X, which said: "An IAF Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed near Shivpuri (Gwalior) following a system malfunction during a routine training flight today. Both pilots ejected safely. An investigation has been ordered by the IAF to ascertain the cause of the accident. The investigation will also look into the aircraft's maintenance records, operational history and pre-flight checks.

The incident comes just months after a MiG-29 fighter crashed near Agra in Uttar Pradesh in November 2024, in which the pilot also ejected safely after experiencing a technical snag. In a similar incident on February 1, 2019, a Mirage 2000 from HAL in Bengaluru crashed The trainer aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff at the airport, resulting in the death of both test pilots, Squadron Leader Samir Abrol and Squadron Leader Siddharth Negi.

As of February 7, 2025, the cause of the crash has not yet been ascertained, and investigations are ongoing.
