The DIG said the official death toll is 30 and the list of the deceased is expected to be released on January 31, 2025. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each person who died in the stampede.
Residents and shopkeepers of the Jhusi area reported a panic situation at the Sector 21 crossing following news of the stampede at Sangam Nose. Raju Nishad, a snack vendor, said that a huge crowd gathered at 6.30 am when people started coming from both sides. Shivcharan Bharti, who runs a tea stall, said that despite the deployment of police, the crowd was so huge that it became difficult to manage it. Eyewitness Saurabh Mishra said that the screams of women and children could be heard. He said that a crane was called to remove the scattered items including clothes, shoes and slippers. The administration evacuated the area in two hours, making it difficult to ascertain whether any incident had taken place or not. The police's decision to investigate the report from Jhunsi area comes after some shopkeepers had earlier denied the claims of stampede-like situation and loss of life and property in the area. DIG Krishna said that the footage, including the recording of cameras installed at the spot, will be thoroughly investigated. In short, 30 people died and 60 were injured in the stampede at Sangam in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh. Reports of panic in the Jhusi area are being investigated and police are checking footage and other evidence to verify claims of a second incident.
