Trump Signs in New Sanctions, While Also Calling Them "Significantly Flawed" and "Unconstitutional"

in #news7 years ago

Today United States President Donald Trump signed into force new sanctions primarily focused at punishing Russia, Iran and North Korea for "aggressive and destabilizing behavior". However, after signing the document, he said that it was "significantly flawed" and "unconstitutional".

"Today, I have signed into law H.R. 3364, the 'Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.' While I favor tough measures to punish and deter aggressive and destabilizing behavior by Iran, North Korea, and Russia, this legislation is significantly flawed," Trump said in a statement from the White House.

He stated that due to the "haste to pass this legislation", Congress "included a number of clearly unconstitutional provisions." The flaws, according to Trump, include "encroaching on the executive branch’s authority to negotiate", driving the nations affected together much more than ever before because the US wouldn't be able to strike any new good deals with them.

However, Trump also gave reason for his signing of the document: "Yet despite its problems, I am signing this bill for the sake of national unity," he said. "It represents the will of the American people to see Russia take steps to improve relations with the United States. We hope there will be cooperation between our two countries on major global issues so that these sanctions will no longer be necessary."
