FOX News Says Losing Healthcare Isn’t a Big Deal Because ‘We’re All Going to Die’

in #news7 years ago

Although an additional 22 million people will become uninsured under the most recent Republican proposal for TrumpCare, that doesn’t matter because “we’re all going to die” someday, a FOX News host explains.

FOX’s Lisa Kennedy Montgomery was attempting to downplay the warnings from several Democratic lawmakers who suggested the bill would result in many people losing their coverage, many of whom would die without it. That sort of rationale, Kennedy Montgomery suggested, was too hysterical to be taken seriously.

“You know what, at least they [Democrats in Congress] are not employing any hyperbole at all,” she said sarcastically.

She added:

You know what the crazy thing is? We’re all going to die. And they can’t predict — there’s no way unless they are absolutely psychic and have a party line to heaven, they don’t know who’s going to die or when or how many people.

There are, however, quite a few estimates of the number of people who will die as a result of the bill.

How many? Estimates range, but at the bare minimum experts are saying tens of thousands of people will die annually as a result of losing coverage. That estimate isn’t entirely implausible either: before the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) became law, the U.S. saw a comparable number of Americans (around 45,000) die each year because they didn’t have access to healthcare.

The suggestion made by several Democrats that many Americans will die as a result of TrumpCare isn’t as hyperbolic as Kennedy Montgomery suggests it is. And to say that “we’re all going to die” anyway is a cynical approach to any decision that Congress will ever make (why pass any law, for that matter?).

The stark reality is that people will lose coverage and access to doctors if this bill is passed. It’s not a huge leap to say that people will die because that access is taken from them — especially since we’ve already lived through that scenario before Obamacare became law.

The Congressional Budget Office predicts that 22 million people will be kicked off of healthcare coverage if the Senate bill is passed into law.
