By tradition, the last days of July, archaeologists invite townspeople Day birch bark, which takes place on the legendary Trinity excavation. It usually coincides with the findings of the first day of birch bark - on 26 July. But this year, the eighth festival was held a little earlier, on Saturday evening, 23 July. The meeting was dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the discovery of the first birch bark and present the results of archaeological investigations opened by the Deputy Director General of the Novgorod Museum Reserve Ph.D. S.V.Troyanovsky.
On the anniversary of the Centre for the organization and provision of archaeological research of the Novgorod Museum Reserve prepared a mini-exhibition, which presented recently discovered photographs and documents from the archives of the Novgorod archeological expedition (NAE). Introducing it, the deputy chief of NAE, Doctor of History, Professor of the Department of Archaeology of the historical faculty of MSU E.A.Rybina noted some of the most notable "exhibits." Thus, the tablet can be seen Artemia Artsikhovsky note, in which he asks the authorities to allocate milk for the expedition. But the pages of the diary of Maria Sedova, written in the days of the first findings on birch bark Nerevskom excavation. Or, thanks to the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences.
- We are often asked - and how to react to the first year of discovery? - Says Elena. - It was noted in the press event. And on the stand you can see a clipping from the newspaper "Novgorod the truth." The following year, Artemy Artsikhovsky made a report to the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences, and is so impressed that it was decided to allocate money for excavations in Novgorod. As I recall, something like one million rubles. That is, the meaning was understood immediately.
In another booth, visitors can see the letters of the samples. Special mention among business documents is generous invitation to visit the medieval Gavrila. According to estimates of Academician A.A.Zaliznyaka one whole letter there are four scraps. But the fragments are different. Some contain the full text and are a good source - sure E.A.Rybina. The exhibition also shows the geography of finds, which was added and Vologda. A total of 12 ancient cities included in this list.
About 12 birch bark found from February to July this year, said A.A.Zaliznyak. Some puzzles scientists have managed to unravel, but even more require more careful consideration and quest to become exciting and important stories from the life of medieval Novgorod. This is the fate of the characters, whose names appeared 64 years ago, and new characters - the master craftsmen who were probably brothers.
The day ended with a tour of the birch bark excavation Trinity-XVI, which held the chief works, PhD, Senior Scientist Department of Archaeology of the historical faculty of MSU V.K.Singh.
