YPG calls on Syrian military to protect borders from Turkey: report

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:45 P.M.) - The military leader of the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units (YPG), Siban Hamo, told Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday that his organization is ready to work with the Syrian military to deter the Turkish Army incursion on the border.

“We are ready for joint action to deter Turkey," the YPG commander told the Saudi-based publication, saying that Ankara “is seeking through all means to eliminate the gains made by the Kurds, has mobilized its troops on the border and bombed territories inside Syria.”

Hamo told the publication that the Russians are happy about this upcoming military operation because it will greatly impact the U.S. forces inside of northern Syria.

“The Russians are pleased with what is happening to disturb the US,” he continued.

While Hamo called on the Syrian military help protect the borders, he did say that they proposed something similar during Turkey's attack on the Afrin region.

“In Afrin, they asked us to hand over the city before the Turkish attack, but we refused. Now they [Damascus] are watching. There is no initiative from Russia or Damascus,” he said.

The pro-government National Defense Forces (NDF) eventually came to the aid of the YPG; however, it would prove to be too little, too late, as the Turkish-backed forces were able to impose their will on the Afrin region.
