BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:45 A.M.) – The spokesperson for the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG), Nouri Mahmoud, accused the Turkish regime of supporting jihadist groups in northern Syria.

Speaking to Kurdistan 24 last week, Mahmoud claimed that Turkey is providing direct support to jihadist group that are currently operating inside of Syria.

“When we talk about some small groups or cells that are active in Raqqa or Deir al-Zor, they are taking their instruction from Turkish MIT [intelligence] and AKP [the ruling Justice and Development Party] leaders,” Mahmoud told Kurdistan 24.

“Turkey, with its capacity, wants to support these groups and even support the area of Hajin against us,” he continued, referencing the town that the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are currently combating Daesh for in southeast Syria.

“Some of these groups were captured in many areas like Kobani, and there are a lot of them around,” Mahmoud highlighted.

The YPG commander said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is attempting to create these kinds of conflicts in order to destabilize the region.

“Sunnis and Kurds all have [an] agreement to coexist, and that is why Erdogan sends these groups to create conflict,” Mahmoud claimed, adding that “up to now, we have never seen any foreign IS fighter captured without a Turkish stamp [on their passport].”
