The 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (French: 2e Régiment étranger de parachutistes, 2e REP) is the only airborne regiment of the French Foreign Legion. It was formed to fill the gap left by the 1st Foreign Parachute Regiment, dissolved in disgrace for its involvement in the Algiers putsch of 1961.
Since the regiment's arrival from Algeria in 1967, it has been stationed at Camp Raffalli near the town of Calvi on the island of Corsica, south of mainland France. It is one of the four infantry regiments of the 11th Parachute Brigade and part of the spearhead of the French rapid reaction force. The regiment is also equipped with Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé (VAB).
The 2e REP is composed in 2016, of ten companies out of which five combat companies enumerated from 1 to 5 and reserve numbered 6 company.
Descended from the 2nd Foreign Parachute Battalion which served in Indochina, it was the regiment that showed capability in Algeria, and more recently in Kolwezi (Zaïre) during Operation Bonite in 1978. Having participated to all the exterior operations since 1970, the regiment was notably projected in Tchad, Lebanon, and ex-Yugoslavia since 1992, at Djibouti, Rwanda, in Central Africa or even Gabon. In 1997, the regiment was engaged in the Congo-Brazzaville during Operation Pelican (French: Opération Pélican). From 2002-2003, at the occasion of the beginning of Opération Licorne (French: Opération Licorne), regiment was engaged in the Ivory Coast. More recently in 2010, the regiment joined the Afghan theatre at corps of Brigade La Fayette (French: brigade La Fayette) (or Task Force La Fayette) as GTIA Surobi, code Battle Group Altor.
