Alfred Hitchcock passes away (1980)

On this date in 1980, the world lost the legend that was Alfred Hitchcock. Born on August 13th, 1899, he was an English film director and producer, widely known as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He was known as the “Master of Suspense” and was just as well-known as his actors.

His first successful film was “The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog.” He also created the very well known movies “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho.” These four films are within some of the top ranked films of all time. Vertigo is determined by the British Film Institute’s best film ever made.

By 2016, seven of his films were selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry. He received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1979 and was knighted in December that same year, four months before he died.

Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993 enters into force (1997)

This convention, developed in 1993, is an arms control treaty that outlaws the production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons and their precursors. Limited production for research, medical, pharmaceutical or protective purposes is still permitted.

As of April 2016, 192 states have become parties to the CWC and have accepted its obligations. As a result of this convention, over 96% of the world’s declared chemical weapons stockpiles have been destroyed.

As of October 2017, all of the 97 declared production facilities have been deactivated. Most of them have been certified as destroyed while some of them have been converted to civilian use.

MLB baseball game sets all time low attendance of 0 (2015)

This seemingly depressing game of Major League Baseball was played on this date in 2015. The total attendance to watch the game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox was 0.

It wasn’t because the two teams were awful or that there was insurmountable weather conditions. Rather, the stadium was officially closed to the public. The 2015 Baltimore protests were the cause of this.

The protests were the result of the arrest and subsequent injuries to African American man Freddie Gray. He was injured during transport in a police vehicle and eventually was put into a coma. He died the following day, a week after his arrest. His death was ruled to be a homicide and six officers were charged.
