SAVE THE INTERNET! - The Man In Charge

What is Net Neutrality and Why is it Important?

I've outlined these details in a previous post, so check it out to get a better understanding.

Who is Ajit Pai?

Ajit Pai is a Republican Attorney spearheading Trump administration's rollback of Net Neutrality. Unfortunately, he is also the Chairman of the FCC, which is the commission overseeing all communication regulations such as Net Neutrality. It's important to note that Pai served as General Counsel at Verizon Communications from 2001 to 2003.

Although Pai was nominated for a Republican party position on the FCC by Barack Obama in 2012, Trump has positioned Pai at the helm as Chairman due to his long standing advocate for less regulations over ISPs.

The FCC's 2015 Open Internet Order was the basis behind the Net Neutrality efforts to maintain equality for all accessing the internet. Although Net Neutrality passed, temporarily securing the freedom of the internet's users, Pai held strong opposition to it and voted against it.

In December 2016 Pai stated the following:

On the day that the Title II [net neutrality] Order was adopted, I said that 'I don’t know whether this plan will be vacated by a court, reversed by Congress, or overturned by a future Commission. But I do believe that its days are numbered.

So why am I bringing this up again?

Due to the recent Internet-wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality on July 12th, concerned citizens and smaller ISPs have spoke up, but Pai is not concerned of the influx of comments on the matter.

His stance is clear when he praised 19 nonprofit municipal-broadband providers who are contributing to the debate to oppose the current Net Neutrality rules. He failed to comment on the 30 small ISPs urging him to preserve the rules.

What's Next?

The FCC is taking comments on Pai's plan of the repeal on their website. Two million new FCC comments have been filed in the recent days. This has been a great achievement from the internet community who are expressing concerns of the repeal of Net Neutrality.

The last day to file a comment to the FCC in this regard is tomorrow, July 17!

We need to continue to shed light on the matter by sharing the knowledge to all who hold internet equality sacred. SO RESTEEM to keep this topic alive!
