Seen ‘Inventing Anna’? Here’s What It Gets Right (and Wrong)

in #netflix3 years ago

A cheeky warning in the new Netflix series "Inventing Anna," on con artist Anna Sorokin, better known as Anna Delvey, gives a lot of leeway for interpretation.

It reads, "This entire thing is totally true." "With the exception of all the portions that are completely made up."

Is the second half of the disclaimer, however, referring to the stories Sorokin told her high-society acquaintances?

Or does it refer to the story that we see onscreen, the one that lies behind Sorokin's tales?

In a nutshell, the answer is yes to both: There's no use in letting facts get in the way of a good story

as Sorokin and the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal"), would surely agree.

Sorokin's month-long trial, which I reported for The New York Times in 2019, revealed that she hijacked a private jet and defrauded banks, hotels, and associates out of nearly $200,000 in evidence.

All of this happened while she was trying to get a $25 million loan from a hedge fund to start an elite arts club.

Sorokin misled Manhattan's elite into believing she was a German heiress worth 60 million euros, allowing her to live a life of luxury.
