What Did We Learn From This NetCoins Debacle?
It's become very obvious that Verge has been forced to cheat in order to keep up their vote rate. I hope the irony isn't lost on the Steem community. Not only is Verge known as a scam-coin that's been hacked multiple times, it's also a privacy coin.
A PRIVACY COIN
Do you guys realize how funny that is? Yeah, I bet this rando privacy coin has a really strong community. Users concerned with masking their transactions love to communicate and work together. That's why they have so many Netcoins votes. LOL. It's going to be hilarious if we beat them without cheating.
This is, of course, impossible. I'm guessing we'll get back into the lead today only to lose at the last second. Hopefully Netcoins realizes the error of their ways and gives us the win anyway. I think we should all complain regardless of who wins.
Even when we were in the lead yesterday I was accusing Verge of cheating. There is absolutely no way that community should be able to keep up. There are already multiple programmers here at Steem demanding that Netcoins share the IP addresses so we can speculate more about Verge buying their votes and/or spoofing IP addresses.
How are they even talking to each other?

Some Podunk forum? Neat.

There's one thread asking people to vote... from the forum moderator cloakfox. No one else is talking about it.

Compare to Steem.
We've had hundreds of posts and resteems on this topic. I'm not saying we aren't cheaters. We are great at cheating. Just look at the Byteball airdrop. There's just no way Verge should be able to keep up with us.
What did we learn?
Netcoins did this all wrong. It's kind of sad that a service dedicated to cryptocurrency wouldn't use the blockchain to keep people honest. That's the whole damn point of decentralization in the first place.
Netcoins should have set up crypto wallets to confirm identities. So, not only should we be required to show a unique Email and a unique IP address, we should also be required to send the minimum amount of crypto to Netcoins. Do you realize how much harder it would be to cheat a contest like this if every account had to be confirmed by a crypto wallet that existed before the contest started?
Something like this could still be set up as a tie-breaker between Verge and Steem. This would be hilarious because we'd get to see just how badly they cheated. It would cost both Steemians and Verge-heads like a tenth of a penny to send the minimum amount of crypto to a wallet.
Conclusion
If you're not willing to spend a tenth of a penny to help your platform, your vote shouldn't count. It's obvious that there are thousands of votes supporting Verge that belong to either the same user or many users that don't even have a Verge wallet.
Back in the lead ATM... and I really don't know anything about no cheating... am I to blame the phone is on 4G, completely different than my home wi-fi!? :)
Gotta love it, can't be surprised though like you said. The format of the contest wasn't really appropriate for this. A crypto wallet is certainly the most appropriate way to do it.
I learned that the community here is a lot smaller than we believed. All the time on here since I joined has been about how strong the community is and how much they can do for each other but now I'm not so sure.
There gas been hundreds of posts about the contest and lots of talk about voting but the numbers don't match up. Over 7 days we have only recieved 12k votes after all the posts and incentives. Less than 2k per day and with some people voting multiple time myself included. That's not a great return if you look at something that has been pushed solidly for the past 5 days and rewards offered.

The question you have to ask yourself is how many people were exposed to the "Go vote" mantra but just ignored it? This number is likely a majority.
Still, I agree. We've been constantly throwing out the number 60,000 active users and it doesn't feel like that much anymore.
I am pretty sure Steem is not so innocent either, now to see who cheated the least haha.

Exactly, yet another reason why Verge is guaranteed to be cheating :D

I am going to make as many votes as possible for steem. Fuck mortality, this is our livelihood! Are you sure netcoins even logs ip's? I have voted from multiple emails by simply opening private windows. Everybody else cheats, I am going to play my hand today.
I wish I was immortal as well. :D
I don't condone cheating but I certainly can't stop you.
hahaha, love me a good typo XD
VPN and alternative emails, since they log the IP, I like windscribe vpn.
Haha yeah if you're going to cheat at least do it correctly amirite?
Noted
I agree with most of your points here. But I assume that many (and I mean a lot) that vote for steem are plankton accounts etc and might not have a crypto wallet etc yet...
Even though I think it would have been the best possible scenario, in order to avoid manipulation etc, I think that the number of votes would have also been significantly less
I'd give 0.001 to a thousand plankton accounts. No Problem. :D
Vote for the victory!
Wow how old is that? My shows 12883 votes.
Come on VERGE you can do it! everyone vote XVG cancel your STEEM vote and vote verge. 2 reasons
haha
Digibyte for president.
I've been thinking about investing more into DigiByte. Why do you like it?
Cheap, fast, secure, on-chain, undervalued, has the ability to scale above and beyond visa and MasterCard. World's longest Blockchain, instant difficulty adjustment, 5 mining algorithms and the DigiByte Awareness Team...to name a few things.
NetCoin should still list STEEM aswell :D
