Animal Facts #5: Vulture

A vulture is a scavenging bird of prey. Vultures are found on every continent of the world except Australia and Antartica. Vultures rarely attack healthy animals, but may kill the wounded or sick when given a chance. Vast numbers of these birds have been seen upon battlefields. Vulture stomach acid is very corrosive, this allows them to safely digest carcasses infected with; boltulinum toxin, hog cholera, bacteria, and anthraz bacteria which would be lethal to other scavengers. They are known to strip the carcass of its meat, skin, and even feathers.

Vultures are believed to have keen eyesight. For them it may be possible to spot a three foot carcass from four miles away on open plains. Some species of vultures circle the carcass before eating it as it will draw other vultures to the food. Becuase of this great eyesight they spend much of their time flying to look for food. They also roam around large territories to locate their food.

When threatened vultures will vomit to lighten their body weight so they can escape. This also serves as a defense mechanism to scare off would be predators. Two days ago on, Saturday September 2, was International Vulture Awareness day which is celebrated on the first Saturday of each September. Zoos, nature preserves, aviaries, and bird refuges around the word participate with informational and fun activities about vultures to show people just how interesting and valuable these birds are.
