So, it’s been raining in Maryland for the last few days, which is not so good for us, but great for the garden.

Today, we decided to take advantage of the comparatively cool weather & start weeding. As you can see it’s a jungle out there, in need of serious TLC

Speaking of needing TLC, our cat, Pinico, was feeling uncommonly affectionate/sociable, this afternoon & joined us in the garden. (She, normally, steers clear and doesn’t like being fenced in). Here, she is keeping my wife, @dianarpo company:

When I sat on a stool, nearby, to do my share of weeding, Pinico surprised me by climbing onto my lap, gently nibbling & playing around:

Also, surprising for this city boy, is the tenacity of some of the weeds, how firmly they cling to the earth with their strong roots & stand their ground on thick stalks. It proved to be something of a workout, sloshing around in the mud, wrestling with these tough, baby-tree-like weeds:

All of which, of course, is a small price to pay for the splendors of our vegetable garden. Let me show you around. Here’s our cabbage patch (green and purple):

Next to that is where we pick our table salad: fresh, fragrant and tasty lettuce, kale and dill

This year, we’re experimenting with growing our sweet potatoes out of buckets, instead of in the soil:

The squash are beauties and I’ve yet to try eating their flowers (I heard they’re delicious sautéed)

But, the biggest hit every year are our tomatoes, which find their way into pasta sauces and gift bags when guests visit. As you can see, they’re not quite their juicy, ruby-red selves, yet:

Nice garden brova, innit

thats right =)))

Haha, I’m a big fan of Sacha (& post-Borat was often mistaken for him :P

Oh my goodness! Good luck with all that weeding! You have some gorgeous veggies! Your cat is so cute! Never know what a cat will do! Does Pinico mean something in another language?

Thank you! It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it. Tomorrow, or the day after, we begin to till :)

It’s so rewarding to eat from our garden— I had zucchini the other day, my favorite vegetable, and we make our own pesto sauce & soups, too!

Pinico is a funny, unpredictable creature. Acts quite like a dog, oftentimes. Y’know, I dunno how she got her name, or if it means anything :)

One of my 14 neices named her ... She also calls her Flower Power, but no one else does :)

Great garden!!! My son and I are trying to grow our own pumpkins this year. Beats carting them home. We shall see how it goes. Pinico is awesome. Did he come up from Florida with you?

Funny thing, we must have accidentally dropped pumpkin seeds on our way home, the other year. One day, as in a fairytale, we awoke to a pumpkin patch of 10-12 beauties which grew quite large!

Good luck growing them :) Nah, Pinico is our Maryland semi-pet (she’s semi-wild :)

It is nice to be in nature and that cat seems to love you so much :D

Yes, a welcome break from spending day, indoors, glued to a computer screen!

Your garden is wonderful, Yahia! I do not have. Perhaps someday there will be :)

Wishing you a garden of your own, one day, so you can follow Voltaire’s advice:
