Saat bencana tsunami terjadi pada tahun 2004 yang lalu, Pantai Ulee Lheue menjadi salah satu pantai dengan kondisi kerusakan yang sangat parah. Banyak pohon tumbang, serta fasilitas umum yang rusak akibat tsunami. Dikatakan bahwa sebelum tsunami pantai ini memiliki pasir putih bersih, tapi semua itu berubah setelah kejadian memilukan menghancurkan Aceh.

Pemerintah juga bergerak cepat setelah bencana tsunami dengan membangun kembali fasilitas umum, dan memperbaiki pantai hingga kini bisa dinikmati kembali keindahannya. Meski pasir putih tak bisa lagi ditemukan, namun Ulee Lheue Beach sebenarnya tak pernah sepi dari pengunjung. Apalagi saat sore hari, banyak ditemukan anak muda yang menikmati keindahan pantai dan fenomena sunset yang fantastis.
